Building a Bespoke Rasant-Powered G-Body with Rothsport: An East Coast Dream Machine

The story begins with an iconic 911 G-Body and an ambitious East Coast enthusiast who dreamed of elevating Porsche’s quintessential air-cooled platform into a performance machine capable of holding its own in the modern era. Working in close collaboration with Rothsport Racing, we took on the challenge of building a fully custom Rasant in-house project, culminating in a masterpiece that pushes the boundaries of air-cooled performance.

The Vision

Our client envisioned a car that seamlessly blended classic Porsche character with cutting-edge performance. This meant staying true to the G-Body’s roots while extracting every ounce of potential from its drivetrain. The cornerstone of the build would be a bored-out 3.4L flat-six paired with Rasant’s renowned Individual Throttle Body (ITB) package. The goal: close to 300 wheel horsepower and razor-sharp throttle response without sacrificing reliability or drivability.

The Heart of the Build: The Engine

The original engine served as the foundation, but it would undergo a complete transformation. Here’s how we approached it:

  • Disassembly and Inspection: Every component was meticulously disassembled and inspected to determine what could be reused, what needed replacement, and what could be upgraded.

  • Boring and Honing: The block was bored out to 98mm, increasing the displacement to 3.4L. Special care was taken to ensure perfect tolerances for the pistons and cylinders that would handle the increased power.

  • Camshaft Selection: To optimize power delivery, we worked with Rothsport to spec performance camshafts that complemented the Rasant ITB package.

Rasant ITB Package: Breathing New Life

At the heart of the performance transformation was Rasant’s ITB package with GT3 Plenum package. This setup provides unparalleled throttle response and airflow efficiency, perfectly suited for a high-performance air-cooled engine. We integrated the ITBs with:

  • Engine Management: A fully programmable EMTRON ensured precise control over fuel and ignition, tailored to the new engine configuration.

  • Custom Fuel System: High-flow injectors and proper fueling upgrades ensured consistent delivery under all conditions.

  • Exhaust System: A custom exhaust system was paired with the ITBs to maximize flow and unleash a sonorous flat-six soundtrack.

Tuning and Results

After months of hard work and collaboration, the moment of truth arrived. On the dyno, the 3.4L engine delivered a peak output of 298 wheel horsepower with a power curve as linear as it was exhilarating. The throttle response was instantaneous, and the engine’s willingness to rev made it feel alive in a way few air-cooled engines can match.

The Road Test

Out on the road, the transformation was undeniable. The car retained the charm and visceral connection of a classic 911 while delivering modern performance that felt at home on a track or a spirited backroad drive. The sound of the ITBs at full throttle was an auditory symphony that left smiles on everyone who experienced it.

Conclusion

This project represents the pinnacle of what’s possible when old-school engineering meets modern technology and craftsmanship. Working hand-in-hand with Rothsport and leveraging Rasant’s expertise, we created a G-Body that embodies the timeless spirit of Porsche while delivering performance that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with today’s sports cars.

For enthusiasts looking to breathe new life into their air-cooled 911s, this build stands as a testament to what’s possible. Whether on the East Coast or beyond, dreams like these can become reality with the right team and vision.
